Safety milestone is marked with £1000 cheque for CHAS

ScotAsh has marked its latest safety achievement by donating £1,000 to the Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS).

Last month the company clocked up three years without a Lost Time Accident - its best safety record ever - and decided to mark the achievement by giving money to a local charity.

Staff voted overwhelmingly for CHAS, who run Rachel House in Kinross and Robin House in Balloch.

Both establishments offer respite care for families from all over Scotland who have children suffering from lifethreatening illnesses.

Professional staff, including nurses and physiotherapists, backed by an army of volunteers, offer round-theclock care for seriously ill children for up to five days at a time, giving parents and other family members a much-needed rest.

Volunteer fund-raiser Garson Gillies, who accepted the cheque on behalf of CHAS, said: "We are very grateful to ScotAsh for choosing to celebrate their impressive safety achievement by donating £ 1,000 to CHAS. The money will be put to very good use.

"It costs £2.4 million each year to run Rachel House and we are largely dependent on donations to fund those costs.

"Donations such as this are crucial to the running of Rachel House and buying the specialist equipment that is needed to provide the best possible care for the children."

ScotAsh Managing Director Peter Quinn said: "I am pleased and proud that we have gone for three years without a Lost Time Accident.

"I would like to thank all our staff for their efforts and Rose Hynd our Health & Safety Manager for putting in place all the systems and procedures that have helped us to achieve this significant milestone.

"I am delighted our staff chose to mark this achievement with a donation to CHAS. The majority of us at ScotAsh are parents and this is a cause we can all relate to."
