Trojan cement for Dounreay

ScotAsh is contributing to the UKAEA's decommissioning programme at Dounreay, writes Chris Bennett.

The business is supplying 5,000 tonnes of Trojan cement to the £2.9 billion 30-year programme in association with parent organisation Lafarge Cement. The product, which has long-term strength and durability benefits, is being supplied to local contractor J Gunn & Sons to build a raised concrete platform for the Shaft Isolation Project.

The project is a critical part of the programme. It will involve isolating the 65-metre deep shaft, which was used as a waste disposal facility, from surrounding groundwater by creating a "grout curtain". Radioactive waste will then be removed by remote control and conditioned to be made safe for long-term storage or disposal.

Ritchie's, the geotechnical division of Edmund Nuttall is leading the contract.

Colin Cooper, Bulk Sales Manager for Scotland and North England said: "Demand for cement and concrete will be intense, making supply logistics critical.

"To ensure the customer always has enough cement on tap we have supplied our customer with a 250-tonne mobile silo as back-up storage capacity."

David Gunn, Managing Director of John Gunn & Sons said: "The reliability of our cement supply is vital to ensure we can keep the concrete pours going and complete our part of the project on time."
