ScotAsh declared East of Scotland Winner in VIBES Environment Awards
ScotAsh has been honoured in the Vision in Business
for the Environment of Scotland (VIBES) Awards. An expert panel
of VIBES judges voted ScotAsh Limited best small company in the
east of Scotland.
The award is the latest in a string of honours for the Fife company, a joint venture between ScottishPower and Lafarge Cement. Earlier this year ScotAsh collected an Environmental Big Tick from Business in the Community and was one of just 12 companies in the UK to be short-listed for the European Business Awards for the Environment. Last year the company won a Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category.
ScotAsh takes the ash output from ScottishPower's coal-fired power stations and processes it into sustainable products for the construction industry. During the last three years, ScotAsh has saved nearly two million tonnes of virgin aggregates, 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and prevented 1.6 million tonnes of ash from having to be land filled.
Peter Quinn, Managing Director of ScotAsh said: "ScotAsh was delighted to win a VIBES Award in 2004. Since then we've continued to improve our environmental performance and develop new uses for ash through our on-going research and development programme with Scottish universities.
"Recent innovations include a superfine concrete enhancer that delivers extra strength and durability and environmental stabilisers that enable the recycling of excavated materials in road repairs. We are very pleased that our efforts have again been recognised by the VIBES judging panel."
Frazer Scott, chairman of VIBES said: "ScotAsh has demonstrated a real commitment to improving the environment through the recycling work that it does. It is making a significant contribution to the future prosperity and environmental well-being of Scotland."
VIBES is Scotland's leading business and environmental competition. It is backed by SEPA, the Scottish Executive, Scottish Enterprise and CBI Scotland among others and acts as a feeder scheme for the prestigious European Business Awards for the Environment.
