ScotAsh Commits to New Police Car Sponsorship

ScotAsh has committed to sponsoring a new community police car for a further four years.

The company, along with Longannet Power Station and key contractors sponsored a Vauxhall Zafira for use by community police officers patrolling the villages of West Fife from 2004 to 2007. Now the partners have forged a deal to fund a new car until December 2011.

Honour is tribute to our people and strategy

Inspector Colin Caldwell said: "The vehicle has proven to be a most valuable asset to the policing of the 15 West Fife villages, enabling the officers to have transport to hand at all times, enhancing the police and multi agency work undertaken by Community Officers.

"It has also been well used in our fight against youth disorder, primarily the consumption of alcohol in public places in the West Fife villages. Due to its lack of obvious police markings, it makes it easier to approach areas discreetly, which would not be possible in a normal police vehicle.

"This enables the Community Officers, along with other staff members, to continue to seize alcohol from youths who were found in these areas, as well as addressing anti social behaviour."

He added: "Since June 2007 we have been using four new marked police pedal cycles in and around the villages. Our community vehicle has been fitted with a cycle carrier to transport these cycles to and from designated areas.

"It allows officers to undertake high visibility foot and cycle patrols in a number of villages during a normal duty tour.

"Officers are involved in assisting in community galas, events and parades.

"The vehicle is utilised to assist in traffic control and also a focal point and backdrop for the policing presence at the event.

"It is a great asset to the police and communities of the West Fife villages, without which we would be unable to support the communities to the extent we do."
