He was elected a corporate member of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1972 and his fellowships include the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.

During his visit, the Duke was given a short presentation about ScotAsh and introduced to staff before a site tour.

Managing Director Peter Quinn said: "As a qualified architect who has an interest in environmental issues, His Royal Highness was very interested in whether architects are specifying our products in view of the growing movement to reduce the carbon footprint of construction.

"He asked many questions about our process, particularly the way we remove carbon from the raw material to make it suitable for quality controlled cements and seemed very interested in the environmental benefits of using pulverised fuel ash in cements, which include less quarrying, reduced carbon emissions and diverting ash from landfill. We were honoured that he chose to visit us."

The Duke was accompanied on his visit to ScotAsh by the Lord-Lieutenant of Fife, Mrs Margaret Dean, who presented ScotAsh with our Queen's Awards in 2005 and 2008.

Also in attendance was Fife Councillor Willie Ferguson, Longannet Power Station's Site Security Manager.

ScotAsh presented His Royal Highness with a commemorative gift and he signed the visitors' book before departing, simply as "Richard".
